FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHICH CODES SHOULD MY EXTINGUISHER COMPLY WITH?
The National Fire Protection Association makes fire codes on the national level. These codes are then adopted at the local level and incorporated into the city’s building code. NFPA 10 is the code that defines installation and maintenance of fire extinguishers.
WHEN SHOULD I HAVE MY FIRE EXTINGUISHER INSPECTED?
Fire extinguishers need to be inspected on a yearly basis. However, your state or insurance agency may require that they are checked as often as monthly. They will have a tag that indicates the date of last inspection and last service provided.
HOW MANY EXTINGUISHERS SHOULD MY BUSINESS HAVE?
WHAT KIND OF FIRE EXTINGUISHER SHOULD I PURCHASE?
It depends on what you’re trying to protect. However, most businesses and public gathering spaces use ABC Dry Chemical extinguishers in either 5# or 10# volumes.
ARE THERE SIGNS TO INDICATE THAT I SHOULD REPLACE MY EXTINGUISHER?
Not all signs will be obvious. However, the pressure gauge at the neck of the extinguisher provides a quick indicator. If the gauge indicates a pressure level insufficient for use, seek maintenance ASAP.
WHAT KINDS OF CRITERIA DOES MY EXTINGUISHER NEED TO MEET?
This depends in part on your jurisdiction. However, all extinguishers need to have the correct chemical volume for the hazard area in which they are installed. Extinguishers also need to be placed on a 75 ft basis, and be located no higher than 48″ and no lower than 2″ off the floor.
